I don’t have any support

One of the biggest challenges that come with being a Muslim revert is often the lack of a Muslim community around you. This community is often the source of strength and support, which are both needed when it comes to navigating Islam as a newcomer. It is especially important at times of celebration, such as Eid, and also times of tribulation of the Islamic Ummah, or community.

However, the bond of Islam goes beyond geographic distances and cultural barriers. Each and every Muslim is your brother or sister in Islam, from the time of Muhammed (peace be upon him) till the end of time, transcending both location and generation. This is not simply a pleasant factoid; you are included every time a Muslim prays for Muslims, and every time a Muslim says in their prayer, “Peace be upon us and on the pious servants of Allah”. The Ummah of Islam loves you and prays for your wellbeing in this life and hereafter, even without knowing you by name.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “The believers, in their mutual love, compassion, and sympathy, are like a single body; if one of its organs suffers, the whole body will respond with sleeplessness and fever.” Sahih Muslim - 2586

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “I wish we see my brothers.” The Companions said, “O Messenger of Allah! Are not we your brothers?” He (ﷺ) said, “You are my Companions, but my brothers are those who have not come into the world yet.” They said; “O Messenger of Allah! How will you recognize those of your Ummah who are not born yet?” He (ﷺ) said, “Say, if a man has white-footed horses with white foreheads among horses which are pure black, will he not recognize his own horses?” They said; “Certainly, O Messenger of Allah!” He (ﷺ) said, “They (my followers) will come with bright faces and white limbs because of Wudu’ (ablution); and I will arrive at the Haud (the pond of Abundance) ahead of them.” ― Sahih Muslim

Also, this very lack of physical community can serve to deepen your bond with Allah if you view it as one of the many tests of this life, and rely on Him for strength and guidance.

Do you think you will enter Paradise without Allah proving which of you ˹truly˺ struggled ˹for His cause˺ and patiently endured? — Family of Imran (3:142)

You might also find some solace in knowing that these feeling of loneliness and isolation can surface even when surrounded by a Muslim community. Many practicing Muslims struggle in the midst of non-practicing Muslims swept up in the luxuries of life, or who were influenced by globalization and adopt more secular lifestyles, and so on.

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “Islam initiated as something strange, and it would revert to its (old position) of being strange, so good tidings for the stranger.” ― Sahih Muslim - 145

Yet, we still advise you to try and contact Muslims around you. Most Muslim acquaintances you know will be delighted to hear about your Islam, and eager to help you out. So will be the case at your local mosque or Muslim center.

Also, we live in a time where distances have been closed by the internet. There are countless Muslim communities online that you can join for guidance and support. Our community, Reverts Server, is more than glad to welcome you!
